Combs
The oldest technique of comb finishing is the use of cane covered with
turf. In Scandinavia, the combs are usually finished using heather
placed in a metal net. In Benelux, the combs and sills are commonly
finished with ceramic elements, so called carboys. Recently, copper
elements gain on popularity, their form resembling those of the ceramic
carboys.
Many original methods of combs finishing have been preserved in many regions, eg. Pomerania uses sticking out one of the tracts under the second one. In the Netherlands, in Friesland people traditionally use so called sawhorses placed on the tops. Similar, cross-like wooden elements are used in northern Denmark and in southern Sweden, they are often very beautifully finished.
Owners of the buildings very often place their own, individual symbols on the tops of the combs.
